Fort Lewis Firing Range Upgrade

The Fort Lewis Firing Range Upgrade, Joint Base Lewis McCord

Project focused on approximately 15 pistol, rifle, and mortar firing ranges. Concern that lead and other metals from firing activities possibly would pose a health risk during construction activities led to a contract to perform an environmental investigation.   At that time, soils in the firing range areas were found to be impacted by lead and arsenic.

ORION’s investigation accomplished the following project objectives: defining the extent of contaminated soils in the firing ranges; assessing the human health associated with the soils, dust, and air; and; evaluating and determining work and cleanup options to address contaminated soils being impacted.
